It’s good to be back in Test cricket again and wearing the West Indies kit after being out for so long with my injuries, though the result wasn’t the one we wanted.
Obviously it was very disappointing to lose the Test to Sri Lanka in Guyana, but I thought we fought very hard to draw the game on that final day and we almost pulled it off.
Sri Lanka are a top side in international cricket and with experienced, quality bowlers like (Chaminda) Vaas and Murali (Muttiah Muralitharan) it is never going to be easy for batsmen. They are top-class performers. But we spent some time at the crease and I’m confident we can learn from this match and come back and draw the series in Trinidad.
Personally, it was pleasing to score a few runs (80 and 72) and although I wanted to go on and get a century in at least one of those innings, it was great to spend a lot of time in the middle at that level again, after being out for so long (almost a year).
It's been a very frustrating period for me since I played at Headingley and injured my shoulder. Just when I was getting fit again I injured my ankle. But on the positive side it tested me mentally, to keep working hard to get fit again and thankfully I made it back, to score runs again. I hope there are many more ahead in this series and beyond.
After those days recovering from injuries and watching the boys playing in South Africa on the TV, I am happy just to be back in the team. People have asked me about losing the captaincy, but it is not a major issue for me because, after the run of injuries I have had, I am just happy to be playing international cricket again and being injury-free. My friendship with Chris (Gayle) is as good as it ever was, nothing has changed there.
Wish me luck in Trinidad.
